You might not know it… but you’re working in PR!

We’re going to take a look at how you establish your personal brand, But before we do… let’s think about why.

In the world of work, no-one knows what you’re doing unless you tell them you’re doing it. It doesn’t matter how great you are: unless you focus on your own publicity, chances are that you will be overlooked.

Part of us still thinks that if we work hard and do a good job, everything’s going to be fine

This attitude often comes naturally to younger people. They grow up not expecting security – no safe jobs, no pensions…. but for us oldies, it’s harder.  Part of our brains still thinks that if we do what the boss says and put in the hours… it’s going to be fine and the future will take care of itself.

It won’t. The boss might be a very nice person, but she’s not in business to help you. She’s not going to make your future plans her top priority. The only person who can do that – is you.

It’s up to you to get yourself out there, in the digital world and the real world too.  Use social media: Twitter and Instagram. Take every chance to be recognised for what you do. Volunteer and gain experience. Put yourself forward to lead.  Every experience is a chance to develop and learn. Always remember – you’re working in marketing and your product is you.
